Why you should focus on Your Heart Health

Now that I am a mom, I am more conscience than ever about my health and wellbeing. It’s hard to pour from an empty cup. It’s also hard to be the best mom, business owner and wife I can be when I am going full-speed. My lifestyle is hectic. Part of it is the season I am in. But that doesn’t mean I can neglect my health.

Finding time for myself and my health has been a sturggle as I juggle it all, but it’s something I am making a point to re-prioritze. Not only so that I can feel my best and be the best mom/wife/business owner/boss, but so that I can lead a long and healthy lifestyle for my family. Now that I am in my 30s, I value my body and what it can do for me even more. That doesn’t just include how I look from the outside, but how it functions on the inside as well.

With it being Heart Health Month, I wanted to share a few easy ways you can take care of your heart everyday.

Taking care of my heart means…

  • Eating heart-healthy meals (and making them for my family)

  • Decreasing caffeine intake or switching up a coffee for low-caffeine tea

  • Look at ways to reduce sodium intake and increase water, healthy fats, etc.

  • Finding time to move my body everyday for 30-minutes (even if it’s a simple walk)

  • Taking moments throughout my day to just breathe and relax (I love the Calm app)

  • Finding time to do things that make my heart happy - even if it’s as simple as reading a book with my son or spending time outside

  • Having meanngful connections (in-person) with close friends or my family

AdventHealth (which is the hospital I delivered my son at) is sponsoring its seventh-annual Heart Month Restaurant Partnership in honor of American Heart Month. This is such a fun and easy way to take care of your health and have a fun night out with a variety of chef-created heart-healthy meals being offered at eight Kansas City eateries. Our family loves to go out for one dinner together a week and we are making a point to visit one of these spots in February to enjoy a heart-healthy meal for a good cause!

Throughout the month of February, local restaurants including Cosentino's Market Blue Valley (Overland Park), Grand Street Café (Plaza and Lenexa), Hereford House (Shawnee, Leawood, Zona Rosa, Independence), story. (Prairie Village), Ignite Wood Fire Grill (Lenexa), Tavern at Mission Farms (Leawood) and Tavern in the Village (Prairie Village) have created unique dishes that are heart healthy - low in fat, sodium and other ingredients that may increase the risk of heart disease. For each heart-healthy dish enjoyed by diners in February, participating restaurants will donate 10 percent of proceeds to the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Heart and Vascular Center to support various programs throughout the community.
